Guided Night Tour at Monteverde Wildlife Refuge

El Refugio Night Tour offers a gentle two-hour walk designed for those eager to encounter Monteverde’s nocturnal wildlife. As the forest comes alive after sunset, you may spot sloths, armadillos, porcupines, kinkajous, olingos, coatis, possums, roosting birds, and an incredible variety of insects.

Since many animals in Monteverde are more active after dark while foraging for food or seeking shelter, a night tour greatly increases your chances of seeing them.

El Refugio is especially renowned for its biodiversity. Visitors often encounter bird species like quetzals, toucans, and motmots, as well as mammals such as monkeys, sloths, and coatis. Frogs, snakes, and countless insects are also commonly seen. On average, participants observe 3–5 mammal species, 5–10 bird species, plus several reptiles and amphibians, making this one of the most wildlife-rich night tours in the region.

Your experience begins with a local guide who provides an introduction and flashlights before leading the group along El Refugio’s trails. As space is limited, reservations are required in advance.
